This is an informal test of a child’s familiarity with the alphabet, together with familiarity of basic number recognition, as foundation skills for literacy and numeracy.
It is designed for children aged 5 to 7 who are slow to acquire basic sight words, and struggling due to poor phonic skills. This test identifies how well they have mastered basic letter and numeral recognition, and what gaps need to be filled. It may be used in addition to a standardised Word Reading test, or in place of one for children still unable to read words.
It is also useful to ask the child to write out the alphabet directly , and to write out numbers to 10 or 20, as a guide to early mastery. This also identifies prevalence of reversals.
This identification of production capacity can be juxtaposed with recognition capacity, as a basis for determining immediate teaching priorities.
The card is most commonly needed for early identification of SLD.
Lamination is suggested for regular use.
