The TRMA is standardised on 1200 South Australian school children across grades 1 to 11, and 68 adults of mixed ages with a work history that utilised arithmetic proficiency (details of standardisation are available in the manual attached).
The test is designed for administration in a variety of settings by diverse users:
- by primary and secondary teachers concerned about proficiency in particular pupils, or as a gauge of current standards.
- by psychologists, counsellors and teachers seeking to diagnose a child or adult with suspected learning difficulties, especially SLD(Dyslexia).
- by TAFE counsellors or HR staff in relation to vocational screening and recruitment issues.
- by parents, or any adult with particular educational concerns.
No particular prerequisites apply for its use. The full test usually takes less than 7 minutes to administer. A profile of results is displayed on completion.
Mental proficiency in rapid recall or calculation of the four arithmetic processes is a core life skill that must be learnt in primary school. It typically relies heavily on explicit teaching and practice in grades 2 to 7.It is a vital and indispensable component of later mathematical problem solving, both complex and rudimentary, in secondary schooling and in most vocations and professions. It is quite distinct from the capacity to employ an electronic calculator device, which is acquired at the secondary school level.
The TRMA’s interactive format is unique in giving a quick, easy to use, repeatable and reliable window on this proficiency. It normally generates an immediate profile of 6 sub scores in percentile format. This is diagnostically relevant and helpful to most users. A small time based fee is applicable to defray costs. Institutional rates may be negotiated.
